Abaya fashion is something truly special in this region, you can see elements of tradition, culture, and a modern sense of style whenever you spot a woman donning one. At the heart of this fashion movement is Mauzan, a brand that has been at the forefront of redefining the Abaya since 1990.
Founded by Rafia Helal Bin Drai, Mauzan has grown from a passion project into the go-to label for women that share a love for new trends while staying true to their roots.
Rafia’s journey began with a deep love for design and craftsmanship, coupled with an appreciation for the traditional Abaya. “I’ve always been inspired by the beauty of our traditional silhouettes, and I wanted to create something that resonated with the ever-changing landscape of fashion,” she shares. A name you must have come across, Mauzan is a symbol of empowerment and individuality, offering everything from ready-to-wear pieces to bespoke styles and luxurious fabrics.
In an exclusive interview with Soigné, Rafia opens up about how the brand has evolved over the years while staying true to its roots. If you’re curious about the brand that’s been dressing the region’s most stylish women for decades, and the vision behind its success, this conversation offers an insightful look into the world of Mauzan and the woman who brought it to life.
What sparked your passion for starting a modest fashion brand back in 1990?
I have grown up with a love for design and craftsmanship and an appreciation for the traditional abaya design. Together, it fueled me to start a brand that focuses on quality and style by redefining our traditional silhouettes that resonate with our ever-changing landscape.
How has your vision for Mauzan changed or grown over the years?
Over the years, Mauzan has evolved from its humble beginnings to a brand loved by women all over the region. With every passing year and every passing trend, we stay true to our roots and design pieces that are a staple in every woman’s wardrobe.
Our vision has always been to cater to every woman’s needs with designs that empower and embrace. Ranging with product lines from ready to wear pieces, bespoke styles to a wide selection of luxury perfumes and fabrics, we have grown to become a fashion house.
Your designs beautifully merge tradition with modern design sensibilities. How do you achieve that balance between honouring the Abaya and Sheila’s heritage and keeping things current and contemporary?
While our designs stay true to the traditional silhouettes, we redefine them with modern elements. A juxtaposition of tradition and modernity through innovative use of fabrics, embroidery and unique statement details.
What’s your creative process like when designing a new collection? Where do you find your inspiration?
The inspiration comes from elements all around us. From nature to architecture, each nook and corner plays as an inspiration that we translate into wearable art.
What inspired you to create Miss Mauzan for younger clients, and how has the response been?
Miss Mauzan was created under the desire to cater to the younger generation while reflecting their vibrant energy and modern tastes.
The response to this line has been positive as our younger clients have been very enthusiastic about it and they truly appreciate the designs. It’s so rewarding to see how the new generation resonate with our creations that incorporate the elegance and heritage of Mauzan.
Are there any new places you’re particularly excited about bringing Mauzan to, and why?
We are continuously working to present Mauzan at different international markets such as Paris and New York as well expanding further within the GCC. Although these are still in the works, we believe in sharing our rich heritage and the unique elegance of our designs far beyond the borders of our region. This is our way of positioning ourselves amongst the world’s top brands while reaching a wider clientele.
How do you see modest fashion evolving in the next 10 years, and where does Mauzan fit into that picture?
Modest fashion has been evolving over the years and will continue to do so. As change occurs, Mauzan will continue to adapt to this by offering styles that cater to the needs of women today without compromising on our vision, quality and craftsmanship.
How do you see the global perception of modest fashion changing in the coming years?
The global perception of modest fashion has changed dramatically. From perceiving modest fashion as black abayas, brands from this region are breaking these stereotypes with innovative designs, extensive color palette and modern silhouettes that showcase our take on fashion in a novel angle. Our region has immense talent and I see this perception changing with every season and every design we bring forth.
Any advice for aspiring designers who want to make their mark in modest fashion?
My advice would be to find your niche, your trademark and build on it. Set yourself reasonable timelines and goals to work towards. It is a challenging journey but each comes with their own lessons that will help you build your brand.
What’s next for Mauzan? Any exciting plans or goals on the horizon?
We’re constantly challenging ourselves and setting goals to further enhance our brand while continuing to set trends and lead in the luxury fashion industry.
Our goals include introducing new product lines and launching exclusive limited-edition collections. One of our main goals is to strengthen our community engagement and implement innovative shopping technologies.
