Breast cancer is not a disease to be taken lightly. It is the most common cancer in women worldwide, with over 685,000 women losing their lives to it. Similarly, about one in 726 men will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. And while that number might not sound too big, lives are still being lost worldwide, lives which could have been saved with awareness and early detection.

What is Pinktober?
Pinktober is the unofficial name for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Held every October, it is an international health campaign dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer. As such, every year in October, the region turns pink for breast cancer awareness. There will be plenty of talks, pop-ups, marathons, and ribbons, and while these are important in starting the conversation on breast cancer awareness, it is important that we all further that conversation into methods of breast cancer prevention.
Breast Cancer Prevention
Breast cancer prevention can be best done through breast cancer screening. This includes a mammogram, possibly an MRI, and other tests. A mammogram is a specialised X-ray designed to detect any abnormalities that could lead to cancer. Whereas an MRI is an imaging test that creates a detailed image of the breast tissue. This helps to paint a more accurate picture and is normally recommended to those who have a high risk of breast cancer.
If a breast cancer screening sounds too intimidating, we strongly encourage you to at least get a mammogram done. It is relatively painless yet is vital in detecting early signs of cancer. In the UAE, studies show that the average age of diagnosis is 10 years younger compared to the rest of the world. This reaffirms the importance of getting a mammogram done as well as taking part in Pintober campaigns to raise awareness.
Taking Part in Pinktober
Taking part in Pinktober has never been easier. Wearing the ribbon is the most common way to participate, but honestly, it’s just the first step. To get actively involved, join in community gatherings and keep your eye peeled for any talks, as this is where we get the most education about the topic.
Taking part also means taking a breast cancer screening, no matter how intimidating. Here are some locations where you can book your screening:
Medcare
Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib
Canadian Specialist Hospital
Al Zahra Hospital Dubai
Additionally, you can donate and support these organisations that continue to help raise awareness and fight the fight by researching breast cancer treatments.
