FENDI has announced that Silvia Venturini Fendi will step down as creative director. As a third-generation Fendi family member, she now steps into a new role as Honorary President, where she will continue to support FENDI’s heritage, champion the brand, and promote the maison’s history and craftsmanship.

“Since 1992, Silvia has greatly contributed to shape FENDI’s creative direction and has been pivotal to the brand’s international success. Her vision has guided FENDI from its Roman artisanal roots into the future, culminating in the celebration of the House’s 100-year anniversary. I am thrilled to see the new projects that Silvia will lead in her new position, contributing not only to FENDI’s legacy and values but the world of Design and Craftsmanship around the world,” says Ramon Ros, Chairman and CEO of FENDI in the brand’s statement.

As a designer, Silvia Venturini Fendi has been a part of FENDI since 1992, seconding the late Karl Lagerfeld in the Artistic Direction. Since 1994, she had taken charge of the Accessories and Menswear lines, creating the Peekaboo bag in 2009. More recently, she was responsible for the womenswear collections and, as creative director, contributed to the maison’s artistic vision and heritage.

As the news dropped, industry speculation has begun with insiders and fanatics alike wondering who would be next to carry on the FENDI vision. According to certain fashion sources, rumours seem to point to Maria Grazia Chiuri, who would be returning to FENDI after her exit in 1999. If that is the case, then it looks like fashion’s game of musical chairs has finally found the women.
