Some careers start with a plan. Modelling, at its most famous, starts with a tap on the shoulder.
A casting director spots a face in a supermarket aisle, on a school run, outside a concert, scrolling through someone’s tagged photos. A stranger says, “Have you ever modelled before?” and suddenly a life has a new plotline. The industry loves to call it discovery, but what makes these stories stick is everything that follows, the nerve, the timing, the risk, the work. Here are the scouting moments that turned into fashion folklore and still get talked about years later.
Bhavitha Mandava

Bhavitha Mandava is the most recent scouting story the fashion world can’t stop talking about. She was approached by a modelling scout on a New York subway while she was still an NYU student and initially said no, before realising a single job could help tackle her student debt. That “job” turned out to be Bottega Veneta at Milan Fashion Week, where Matthieu Blazy quickly cast her as one of his standout new faces. When Blazy moved to Chanel, Bhavitha followed, opening Chanel’s Métiers d’Art 2026 show, staged in a New York subway for a full-circle moment. She now continues to walk exclusively for the house as a House Ambassador.
Anok Yai

Sudanese-American model Anok Yai has a scouting story perfectly tied to the current internet age. In 2017, Anok attended Howard University’s homecoming week, where photographer Steve ‘theSUNK’ Hall asked to take a picture. Uploading it to his Instagram page, the photo of Anok immediately went viral, prompting calls and DMs from various modelling agencies. Four months later, Anok was seen opening Prada’s FW 2018 collection at Milan Fashion Week. Since then, Anok Yai has walked countless runways, modelled for various editorial campaigns, and was recently awarded Model of the Year by the British Fashion Council.
Amira Al Zuhair
Saudi-French model Amira Al Zuhair initially considered modelling but was far from it. Growing up in London, she was a member of the UK Youth Parliament at age 14. In the next year, she was scouted by a modelling agent while having lunch with her mother in a quaint Parisian bistro. And since then, Amira has been working with the biggest names in the industry, from Balmain to Prada, Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana, Jacquemus, and more. Amongst this, she went back to school, graduating from King’s College London with a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics.
Gisele Bündchen

Gisele Bündchen initially aspired to be a volleyball player. However, her mother had other plans. In 1993, her mother signed her and her sister up for a modelling course to teach her confidence and better posture. The girls were rewarded with a trip to Curitiba, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro after finishing the course. It was in São Paulo that Gisele was scouted at a shopping centre, eating at a McDonald’s. 2 years later, Gisele made her debut at New York Fashion Week.
Imaan Hammam

Another story that begins at a train station, Amsterdam-born, Egyptian-Morrocan model Imaan Hammam was discovered at Amsterdam’s Central Station when she was only 13 years old. She signed her first contract when she was 16 and made her debut walking for Jean Paul Gaultier Couture. As an Afro-Arab model, her discovery and debut broke multiple barriers and stereotypes in the industry. She became the first Afro-Arab face of Chanel Beauty and has since walked for Givenchy, Versace, Schiaparelli, and more.
Kate Moss

One of the modelling legends, Kate Moss, had her start when she was 14. Returning from a family trip to the Bahamas, Kate was spotted at JFK airport in New York. Her first modelling gigs included British youth magazines and campaigns, whereas now she has the biggest name in fashion under her modelling belt.
Natalia Vodianova

A heartfelt rags-to-riches story, Natalia Vodianova grew up poor in Russia, helping her mother sell fruit on the street. It was here that she was presumably spotted. Starting her career at 16, she has worked for brands like Stella McCartney, Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent, and more. Keep in touch with her past, Natalia is also a philanthropist, establishing the Naked Heart Foundation that supports children with special needs and helps to create inclusive playgrounds for them in Russia.
Naomi Campbell

Another modelling legend who made her entrance through sheer discovery. Training to be a ballet dancer at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, Naomi Campbell was scouted by an agent while window-shopping at Covent Garden, London. She began with editorials before walking the runways of Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Alaïa, and more.
Rania Benchegra

Moroccan model Rania Benchegra’s story also comes with similar beginnings. She was spotted shopping in a mall in Marrakech and immediately went on to work with brands like H&M and Victoria’s Secret Pink. Since then, she has walked for Monclear, Ralph Lauren, Louis Vuitton, and more.
Yasmeen Ghauri

Although retired, former fashion model Yasmeen Ghauri was a scene to reckon with in the fashion world. But before she got there, she was a regular Canadian teenager. She was scouted after being seen walking out of a hair salon. Despite her parents’ disapproval of pursuing modelling, the 17-year-old took the plunge, debuting at Milan and Paris fashion weeks, grabbing the attention of maisions and fashion critics alike for her captivating walk. While we normally feel like a million bucks after a good blowout, Yasmeen took that quite literally, establishing herself in the fashion world before retiring in 1997.
