Makeup artist Anouska Bloom sees ghost lashes as part of the current preference for makeup that lets skin show through, where healthy-looking skin matters more than heavy makeup.
That doesn’t necessarily mean wearing less makeup across the board. It means being more selective about where you put it. Instead of coating your lashes in black, you might add a little more blush. Leave the eyes alone and add a little more to the lips. And instead of trying to perfect every feature, you leave a few of them alone.
The Beauty of Bare Lashes
Going without mascara doesn’t mean you have to completely abandon your lashes. The easiest place to start is with an eyelash curler. Curling the lashes opens up the eyes without adding any visible product, which is exactly what makes the look work. Makeup artists also recommend tight-lining with a soft brown pencil if you want a little definition without making your lashes the main focus.
And if completely bare feels like too much of a jump, brown mascara is an easy middle ground. It gives you a little definition without the full black-mascara effect. There’s also clear mascara, which can hold a curl and add a little shine without creating the obvious, inky lash effect.
The goal isn’t to look completely bare. It’s to make the makeup feel a little more lived-in.
Let the Rest of Your Makeup Be More Experimental
One of the best things about skipping mascara is that it gives the rest of your face a little more room. Fresh, glowy skin, a bit of blush and a good lip. Cream eyeshadow with brushed-up brows. Or honestly, just concealer, blush and lip balm, because, why not?
With less happening around the eyes, a little colour elsewhere can go a long way. This is where it starts to feel less like a beauty rule and more like doing what works for you. You don’t have to go completely bare. Keep the things you like, skip the things you don’t, and make the rest work around it.
