Recently, the Metropolitan Museum of Art cancelled its upcoming exhibition, centred on honouring the legacy of John Galliano. Now, with a new theme in place, the museum has made its official announcement for The Costume Institute’s Spring 2027 exhibition. Titled “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday”, this theme looks at how design can turn ordinary garments and materials into extraordinary clothing.

The exhibition will be on view from May 9, 2027, through January 9, 2028, at The Met Fifth Avenue and will explore how designers rework familiar garments, everyday objects, and commonplace materials through craft, construction, material experimentation, and conceptual wit. This will include pieces such as jeans and T-shirts, as well as materials like paper, plastic, and metal.

This theme complements the current state of fashion as both brands and the fashion-forward turn to upcycling and thrifting to offload the environmental stress caused by the industry. Brands like Coach’s Coachtopia, MM6 Maison Margiela, and EFAAR already show us how everyday pieces can be refashioned through design, silhouette, and wear.

It is also what we can expect for the upcoming Met Gala. Taking place on Monday, May 3, 2027, further details for the event is said to be announced soon.
