The 28th Conference of the Parties, or COP28, was an important international gathering organized to discuss climate change. It brought states together to discuss and put climate change mitigation plans into action under the auspices of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). World leaders, policymakers, scientists, and activists all gathered to discuss environmental policies, emission reduction targets, and international cooperation aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change on a global scale.

The United Nations has annually held the Conference of the Parties (COP) since 1995. However, despite the fashion industry’s longstanding spotlight on environmental impact. It has remained absent from the annual sustainability dialogue.

This year marked fashion’s first time being involved in the conversation at COP28. With big names and important groups in sustainable fashion coming together in Dubai. It was also the first time that COP held a Sustainable Fashion Show featuring not the usual trash-to-fashion designs. The conference’s debates and insights offered a clear image of the industry’s considerable environmental effects. Calling for an immediate and comprehensive reevaluation of its approach and stressing the industry’s responsibility to adopt more sustainable practices for design, production, and consumption. One of the key concerns and focus is the industry’s reliance on fossil fuels.

Founder of the Ellen McArthur Foundation, Ellen MacArthur, and sustainability advocate Samata Pattison. Also delved into how fashion can thrive sustainably by maintaining, reusing, refurbishing, and recycling resources, addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and decoupling growth from finite resource consumption.

The Way Forward

Fashion is doubling down on smart design and new materials to become more eco-friendly and circular. Expect to see lots of fresh, innovative options that replace traditional materials, and more recycled fibers. Stella McCartney’s Sustainable Market at COP28 highlighted this shift, featuring cool stuff like leather made from grapes and sequins from tree cellulose.
