More than just a way of communicating, it also keeps people tied to their roots, forming an essential part of their identity that goes beyond geographical boundaries—a sentiment perfectly captured by Jashn-e-Rekhta.
Dubai played host to the two-day festival last weekend, and it was an exquisite celebration of the Urdu language’s creative brilliance. For the very first time, the magical tapestry of Urdu language, literature, and culture was brought together and beautifully integrated into the diverse atmosphere of the UAE. After capturing hearts in London and India, Jashn-e-Rekhta continued its journey in the culturally diverse landscape of the metropolis.
From soul-stirring ghazals to toe-tapping qawwali, magical dastangoi performances, and thought-provoking panel discussions, the event had it all. Poetry lovers also enjoyed the grand Mushaira, bringing together a stellar lineup of artists and speakers. With pop-ups from different desi restaurants serving authentic Pakistani and Indian food in the heart of Zabeel Park, event-goers found the taste of home away from home.

In a panel discussion, renowned Pakistani actresses Mahira Khan and Samina Peerzada, along with actor Adeel Hashmi, engaged the audience in a heartfelt conversation on the main stage, celebrating the beauty of Urdu.
A major highlight of the event was the live performance by Abida Parveen, the renowned Pakistani singer, composer, and Sufi music maestro. With numerous accolades to her name, she is rightfully hailed as the ‘Queen of Sufi Music’ for her exceptional singing and sufi music talents.
Notable for being the visionary founder of the Rekhta Foundation, an organisation devoted to preserving and advancing Urdu literature, Sanjiv Saraf launched his most recent book, “Andaz e Bayan Aur” at the festival. It contains one hundred English translations of Mirza Ghalib’s ghazals.
Renowned kathak dancer and TEDx speaker Shinjini Kulkarni, along with writer and theatre person Danish Iqbal & Troupe, flawlessly performed a tribute to the life of the legendary singer Noor Jehan.
