Everything to Know About the World Hijab Day Global Virtual Conference 2024

Your opportunity to stand against discrimination

World Hijab Day, founded by Nazma Khan in 2013, has grown into a global movement observed annually on February 1 across 140 countries. Initiated with the intention of fostering religious tolerance and normalising the wearing of hijab, Nazma Khan, a Bangladeshi-American, was motivated by her own challenging experiences. Having endured discrimination and bullying in school and university, including being spat on, chased, kicked, and labeled a “terrorist,” Khan sought to create a platform where women of all backgrounds could understand and experience the significance of the hijab for a day. In the spirit of awareness and education, World Hijab Day encourages women worldwide to don the hijab temporarily, sharing insights into its cultural and religious importance. The annual event has gained international recognition, with New York State officially acknowledging it in 2017 and the House of Representatives in the Philippines designating February 1 as an “annual national hijab day” in 2021.

Nazma’s non-profit organisation, World Hijab Day (WHD), is firmly rooted in the principles of religious tolerance, cultural appreciation, and international solidarity. WHD stands independent of political ideologies and economic interests. With its annual event challenging stereotypes and fostering cross-cultural dialogue, WHD champions a world where women can practice their choices freely. The organisation’s transparent and accountable approach, exemplified by its non-profit status, positions WHD as a catalyst for positive change, paving the way for a more inclusive and accepting global society.

This year’s virtual conference will take place on February 1, 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM (EST) featuring a panel discussion between Youssra Kamel Kandil, former actress Aisha Rosalie, Mural Artist Jaime Brown, physician and author Dr. Nour Akhras, Quran reciter Maryam Jazeem, author and public speaker Heba Subeh Hyder, First Lady of Modest Fashion Rabia Z, humanitarian and activist Lisa Vogl, Afghan women’s rights activist Sveto Muhammad Ishoq and NLP practitioner Idil Khair.
