In celebration of International Women’s Day, we’re looking back at the achievements of some of the most influential women who have made significant contributions to promoting gender equality and human rights.
One such remarkable figure is Moushira Khattab, an Egyptian diplomat, politician, and activist, the former Minister of State for Family and Population in Egypt, whose contributions to women’s rights and child protection have earned her international acclaim.
Born in Egypt, she has been a pioneering force in the fight against female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage, two practices that have long plagued various communities in Egypt and beyond. With a career spanning several decades, she has worked tirelessly to enact legal reforms and policies aimed at protecting the rights of women and children.
Khattab’s journey began in the diplomatic sphere, where she represented Egypt in various countries, including South Africa, Czechoslovakia, and Austria. However, her work extended far beyond traditional diplomacy. She served as the Secretary-General of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood in Egypt, where she played a crucial role in pushing for laws that criminalise FGM and advocate for the rights of children.
Her efforts have not gone unnoticed. She has been recognised on the international stage for her dedication to human rights. She was a candidate for the position of Director-General of UNESCO, reflecting her global influence and commitment to education, culture, and gender equality.
Her legacy is a testament to the power of resilience and determination in the face of challenges, demonstrating how one person’s dedication can lead to significant societal changes and inspiring future generations to continue the fight for equality and justice.
In February 2024, she also gave a keynote speech at EGYPES 2024 on advancing gender equality in the energy sector and tackling sociocultural barriers.
On International Women’s Day, we honour Moushira Khattab not just for her achievements but for her unwavering commitment to making the world a better place for women and children. Her life and work remind us of the importance of advocating for those who cannot do so for themselves and the transformative impact of standing up for human rights and dignity.
