Emirati Women’s Day, celebrated annually on August 28, is a tribute to these remarkable women.

More than just a nod to women’s accomplishments—it’s a national event that recognises and honours the phenomenal contributions of Emirati women to the country’s growth and development, from trailblazing entrepreneurs to scientists.

The History

The day was established in 2015 by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, lovingly known as the “Mother of the Nation.” Sheikha Fatima has been a relentless advocate for women’s rights and empowerment, ensuring that Emirati women have the support they need to excel. The chosen date commemorates the establishment of the UAE’s General Women’s Union in 1975, a testament to decades of progress in gender equality.​

Through tireless advocacy and strategic initiatives, the union has made significant moves in advancing gender equality and ensuring women’s voices are heard at all levels of society​.

What’s the Theme for 2024?

While we’re still waiting for the official theme of Emirati Women’s Day 2024, it’s expected to resonate with the UAE’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and innovation​​. Last year’s theme, “We Collaborate for Tomorrow,” focused on harnessing collective strength to tackle global challenges like climate change. Given the UAE’s role as the host of COP28, this focus on sustainability is likely to be front and center again​.

Dr. Dalya Al Muthanna, President of GE in the UAE, spoke about the transformative power of sustainability initiatives led by women​. Meanwhile, Latifa AlKetbi, development manager at Miral, emphasised that empowered women are key to a prosperous future​.

As Habiba Al Marashi, co-founder of the Emirates Environmental Group, noted, Emirati women are not just participants but leaders in the journey toward sustainability, showcasing resilience and innovation​.

Women in the UAE are making waves across various sectors, from tech and science to business and government. They hold 50% of the seats in the Federal National Council and 27.5% in ministerial roles, highlighting the country’s commitment to female leadership​.
