How Brat Summer Kickstarted Fashion’s Green Fever

From emerald to mint, it looks like we cannot get enough of this hue

Last summer, social media was in a frenzy when popstar, and bonafide party girl, Charli XCX released her sixth studio album, brat.

And since then, shades of green have been everywhere. The release of Wicked took this trend even further—with pink and green pairings that were everywhere—it started to feel like a natural combination. And once the hype of the movie died down, the popularity of matcha took over. All of a sudden, we were getting matcha nails, matcha ice cream, even matcha noodles!

It was only a matter of time before we saw green incorporated into fashion. SS25 collections began rolling out green looks in all the shades you can imagine.

On the surface, Charli XCX’s neon, acid green can be polarising. But when it comes to fashion, green as a colour is surprisingly complementary to most people. Of course, the neon acid green stayed with people, mostly as a joke, but the other shades were up for fashion grabs. Think Keira Knightley’s flowing green gown in Atonement (2007), designed by Jacqueline Durran, a throwback video of which is one of the most viral reels on internet right now.

We saw Chartreuse, a bright and bold colour that sits between yellow and green, making an appearance at Gucci’s SS25 collection. Appearing on six looks, it stood out even more against Gucci’s palette of neutrals.

Military green, which we would normally find in khakis, was in Saint Laurent’s collection. Its earthy tone makes it a warm, comforting colour that is suitable for formalwear, which is exactly what happens in Saint Laurent’s collection.

Whereas Prada incorporated green in its most natural shade. A grass green jacket for those colder months to show that our outfits don’t have to be drab and dull during the winter. Whereas Chloé, Stella McCartney, and Valentino all debuted looks of sage green that quickly became the trend of spring 2025. Although overshadowed by butter yellow, the light, pastel nature of sage green makes it the perfect delicate hue that embodies spring.

All in all, green has been having its moment. While it may look garish to some, green is a multifaceted colour—it can be both fun and exciting, and refined and elegant. Though it is not as prominent as it once was with brat, there’s no doubt that since the album’s release, the green fever lingers on.
