We continue to joke that 2026 is the new 2016, but for Coachella, festival goers took that phrase as a mantra. The pendulum has shifted again and from simple looks emphasising glass skin, beauty has shifted to outworldly glam. Think graphic liners, sparkly lids, body glitter and trends directly borrowed from the past. While soft shimmers and carefree looks continue, albeit in a small way, it’s clear that for Coachella 2026, the theme was to channel in main character energy, be it ethereal or edgy. And here are the looks we’re taking note of for the next festival.
Ethereal Glam
Zara Larsson is the one to thank for this makeup style’s comeback to the mainstream. Taking direct inspiration from the dolphin meme that made her viral, the look created by makeup artist Sophia Sinot has cemented her current brand and aesthetic, rooted in a carefree, summer-party vibe. And isn’t that what Coachella is all about? Every year, we will get an interaction of this look, but for the first time, we’re seeing makeup inspired by Sinot’s creations. Think colourful inner corners, strong ombre blush that slowly builds intensity, and of course, rhinestones all over.
Face Jewellery
Seen across both Coachella and the Revolve Festival, face jewellery like nose rings and face chains made plenty of appearances. Inspired by Arab and South Asian jewellery trends, these pieces are more minimalistic compared to the OGs and can make any makeup look festival-ready.
Glitter Lids
Another festival staple similar to ethereal glam. Unlike the previous makeup look, glittery lids this year were emphasised with dark eyeliner or were doing the heavy lifting with a neutral base and neutral lips.
Glowy Soft Glam
Thinking about the desert sun, some festival goers skipped the bold colours in favour of a natural makeup that kept their skin comfortable. The only change was highlighter enough to emit a soft glow. The rest stayed to soft blushes and plush pink lips. The subtle look has been a fan favourite for festival attendees for a while now and while it’s overshadowed this year with bright, glittery looks, it’s not completely going away anytime soon.
Hair Jewellery
Some people are exchanging vibrant makeup for vibrant hair. And no, we’re not talking about dying it any particular shade but emphasising natural hair with tinsel, gems, or clips. Hair tinsel is a Y2K trend brought back by Gen Z; we didn’t expect to see it still going strong but those attending Coachella said otherwise, adding a subtle sparkle to their hair. Others are doing it with gems, a staple for the festival scene. While those taking the edgy route with their look are opting to zhush their hair with safety pins or metallic clips. And those going their ethereal route are doing something similar but with butterfly clips. A simple but effective way to spruce up a look, these hairstyles pair especially well with nighttime events.
Flushed Cheeks
Also known as blush blindness, this look is Sabrina Carpenter’s signature and was spotted on a few festival goers as well, maybe as a nod to the singer who was slated to perform on weekend one. But the flush alone is a very flattering look to most, especially for a festival in the desert where one would naturally flush anyway.
Bold Colours
We’re seeing bold colours reenter fashion, so naturally they will reenter beauty as well. We’re talking about hot pink eyeshadows and vibrant metallic blue lips, that’s an obvious nod to the 2016 glam that people wore as part of their everyday makeup.
