Everything You Need to Know About Your T-Zone

The do’s, don’ts and products worth knowing.
The Ordinary

If your forehead, nose and chin seem to have their own agenda when it comes to oil, you’re not imagining it. That’s the T-zone for you. It naturally produces more sebum than the rest of your face, which can mean a little extra shine, clogged pores and the occasional breakout, especially if your skin leans oily or combination.

The answer isn’t to scrub your face until it squeaks or cover it in every mattifying product you can find. Instead, give your T-zone the extra attention it needs and leave the rest of your skin alone.

Here’s what actually helps, what to skip and what’s worth adding to your routine.

What Is the T-Zone?

The T-zone is the central part of your face; forehead, nose and chin. Because these areas tend to contain more oil-producing sebaceous glands, they can become noticeably shinier than the rest of your face.

For combination skin, this can be particularly annoying. Your nose is oily, your forehead is shiny, and yet, your cheeks are asking for another layer of moisturiser. The answer isn’t necessarily a whole new routine. It’s about being a little more strategic with where you apply certain products.

The T-Zone Do’s

Cleanse Regularly

A gentle cleanser should be the non-negotiable starting point. Cleansing morning and night helps remove excess oil, sunscreen, makeup and the general accumulation of the day without leaving your skin feeling stripped. If you’re particularly prone to clogged pores, a cleanser containing salicylic acid can be useful. Salicylic acid works by exfoliating and helping to unclog pores, making it particularly beneficial for blackheads and congestion.

Use Salicylic Acid But Don’t Go Overboard

If your T-zone is where most of your blackheads and congestion live, salicylic acid is one ingredient worth knowing. It can help clear clogged pores and exfoliate the skin. But more isn’t automatically better. Start with one salicylic acid product rather than combining a cleanser, toner, serum and mask all at once. Overdoing active ingredients can leave skin irritated and dry.

Keep Moisturising

Holistic Protocol

This is where oily skin gets a little confusing. Your T-zone can be shiny and still need hydration. If you’re using ingredients like salicylic acid, keeping your skin moisturised can help keep dryness and irritation in check. If your skin is oily or prone to breakouts, go for a lightweight, oil-free or non-comedogenic moisturiser that won’t feel heavy.

Wear SPF

Nice Beach – Hommage

Your T-zone doesn’t get a free pass from sunscreen just because it gets shiny. Choose a lightweight formula that doesn’t leave you feeling like you’ve added another layer of grease.

Try a Clay Mask

LESSE

Clay can be useful when your T-zone is feeling particularly congested. Rather than covering your entire face in a drying mask, try applying it just to your forehead, nose and chin. Clay is among the ingredients dermatologists recommend for oily or acne-prone skin because it can help absorb oil.

Keep Blotting Papers in Your Bag

Sometimes you don’t need to add anything. You just need to tone down the shine. Blotting papers are an easy way to freshen up your T-zone throughout the day without repeatedly washing your face or piling more powder onto it.

The T-Zone Don’ts

Over-Cleanse

If your first instinct when you get shiny is to wash your face again, maybe don’t. Cleansing more often won’t necessarily fix the oiliness and can leave your skin feeling irritated instead. A simple morning-and-evening routine is usually a better place to start.

Scrub Your Pores

That satisfying feeling of scrubbing away every last blackhead? Your skin may not be quite as impressed. Harsh scrubbing can leave acne-prone skin irritated, so gentle exfoliation is usually the better move.

Throw Every Acid at Your Face

Salicylic acid. Glycolic acid. Retinol. Toner. Peel. Mask.

You really don’t need to throw all of them at your skin at once, or even cram them into the same week. If you’re introducing a new active, give your skin some time to get used to it before adding another. Layering too many treatments or constantly switching between them can leave your skin irritated instead of clearer.

Skip Moisturiser

A shiny forehead doesn’t mean your skin has had enough hydration. Especially if you’re using exfoliating or acne-focused ingredients, moisturiser helps support your skin barrier and can make those active ingredients easier to tolerate.

Pick at Your T-Zone

The nose is tempting. That tiny blackhead on your chin is even more tempting. We know. But picking and squeezing can worsen inflammation and increase the risk of marks and scarring. Put the tweezers down. Seriously.
