Saudi National Day commemorates the unification of the Kingdom under the name Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932. The story goes back decades earlier to 1902, when King Abdulaziz recaptured Riyadh and began the process of bringing the different regions of the Arabian Peninsula together under his rule.

Over the following years, he gradually unified areas including Najd, Al-Hasa, Asir and the Hijaz. On September 23, 1932, a royal decree officially declared the unification of the country as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The date has since become an annual celebration of Saudi identity, heritage and national pride.

Who Was King Abdulaziz?

King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud, also known as Ibn Saud, was the founder and first king of modern Saudi Arabia. Born in Riyadh in 1876, he spent part of his early life in Kuwait before returning to the Arabian Peninsula. In 1902, at around 26 years old, he successfully recaptured Riyadh with a small group of supporters.

This marked the beginning of a decades-long campaign to unite the region. By 1932, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had been established. During his reign, King Abdulaziz also oversaw the development of government institutions, education, healthcare, infrastructure and diplomatic relations.

The Story Behind September 23

September 23, 1932 was the day King Abdulaziz officially declared the unification of the Kingdom. The date therefore represents more than a national holiday. It marks the formation of modern Saudi Arabia and the beginning of a new chapter for the country. Today, the occasion is celebrated across the Kingdom with national decorations, cultural events, performances and public celebrations.

What Does Saudi National Day Look Like?

By the time September arrives, green is everywhere. Streets, buildings, shopping centres and landmarks are decked out in the colours of the Saudi flag, while the National Day identity pops up across public spaces, brands and social media.

The celebrations usually come with plenty to do, from fireworks, concerts and air shows to cultural performances, exhibitions, parades and family events. Malls, restaurants and brands also get involved with special offers and National Day-themed experiences, so the festivities tend to spill well beyond the main event itself.

And, of course, fashion gets its own National Day moment. Green and white make their way into wardrobes, whether that’s through a full monochrome look, a traditional-inspired piece or simply a green accessory. It’s an easy excuse to have a little fun with the wardrobe while getting into the spirit of the celebrations.

What Is the Significance of the 2026 Theme?

“Our Pride Lies in Our Nature” places Saudi identity at the centre of this year’s celebrations, carrying the same theme into the Kingdom’s 2026 National Day identity. The visual identity focuses on the qualities that have long been associated with Saudi culture, while keeping it rooted in the present.

At its heart are values including authenticity, courage, determination, generosity, hospitality and vision, a mix of qualities rooted in tradition but also tied to the country’s ambitions for the future. The identity itself brings together geometric forms and patterns inspired by traditional Saudi weaving, giving the campaign a modern look without losing that connection to heritage.

It also feels very in line with where Saudi Arabia is today; a country changing quickly while keeping its history and traditions firmly in the picture.

What to Know

Saudi National Day is ultimately a celebration of where the Kingdom has been and where it’s going. From King Abdulaziz and the unification of Saudi Arabia to the celebrations taking place across the country today, September 23 is a chance to celebrate the Kingdom’s identity, heritage and the future it’s building.
