When it comes to embellishment, 2026 fashion has brought in plenty of options. In some spaces, it’s all about bedazzling while on the runways, it was a study of lacework. And on the internet, it’s frog closures. Sported by it-girls globally, the toggle detail comes in a variety of silhouettes, materials, and cuts, leaving something for everyone.
Originating in China, the frog closure—also known as pankou—is a braided, decorative knot. Similar to brooches, it’s used to fasten garments while still allowing the piece to have a decorative element. For its 2026 Lunar New Year collection, Adidas released a track jacket featuring the frog closure and calling it viral would be an understatement. Dubbed the “Tang” jacket, its Chinese-inspired design reimagined the frog closure in a sporty way and became the foundation of the current trend we see today.
This isn’t a first for the decorative knot. After being developed in China, the design moved along the Silk Road to the Ottoman Empire and eventually Europe, being adopted into military uniforms, jackets, and dresses.
Now we have a similar case of frog closures across cotton dresses, satin jackets, denim, cardigans, and abayas. Some appear in minimalistic designs while some stick to traditional finishes against opulent brocades. But ultimately between the traditional braid and the reimagined spin, this key detail isn’t going anywhere soon.
