Kickstart Your Modeling Career in Dubai With This Step-by-Step Guide

Everything you need to know
@insdn_

The UAE is the region’s hotspot when it comes to fashion, beauty, and luxury campaigns – we know that. Dubai, in particular, is the epicentre of this glamorous world. If you’re an aspiring model looking to break into this scene, you probably know it’s not that easy, and it takes way more than looks. It requires preparation (i.e., a ton of research), professionalism, as well as awareness of local regulations.

Lucky for you, we went ahead and did the research. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get you from your first comp card to your first casting.

Know Your Modeling Path

The first step is knowing where you fit in. What’s your niche? Do you want to walk runways, be an editorial model? Or would you rather go into commercial modeling, which is more flexible in its requirements than editorial? There is a whole world of niches out there. You need to know what’s the ideal one for you.

Take Agency-Standard Digitals

The next step is getting your digitals. These are simple photos meant to show your natural look. They don’t need to be professionally taken – the only requirements are they be taken in natural light, with a plain background, in neutral clothes (a basic white tee and jeans should do the trick) with minimal makeup.

Take a variety of poses but the basic, necessary ones are: headshot, 3/4, full-body, and side profile.

Build Your Portfolio & Comp Card

Next steps involve building your portfolio and your composite card.

A comp card is a one-page PDF with your digitals (headshot + 3 to 4 varied images) and stats (height, bust/waist/hips measurement, and hair/eye color). Your comp card is how you show agencies and clients a brief overview of your portfolio.

Your portfolio increases your chances of getting booked because it shows agencies your experience and generally gives you a competitve edge – it’s like your CV for modeling. At the same time, there have been many instances of models being booked even if their portfolio is not the best.

Apply to Reputable Agencies

Now with all this prep and information in your arsenal, start approaching agencies. Some of the most established names in Dubai include MMG Models, Bareface, EModels, and Diva.

Each has an official website with submission instructions. Keep your email short and professional: attach digitals, include your stats, and link your Instagram if it reflects your modeling work.

Here’s a hot tip: if an agency asks you to pay a sign-up fee, it’s highly possible it’s a scam. Legitimate agencies earn through commissions, not upfront charges.

Attend Castings & Open Calls

Beyond agencies, keep an eye on casting calls and other open auditions. For example, Dubai Fashion Week has a digital application portal, and so does the Arab Fashion Council. Platforms like MMG Talent also advertise jobs and open calls. Attending regularly will familiarize you with the process and the people involved, and exponentially increase your chances of getting booked.

Sort Out Legal Requirements

Get your paperwork sorted! There’s essentially 2 main things to know:

  1. You need a freelance visa in Dubai to be a freelance model. There are programs like GoFreelance (via Dubai Media City or Studio City) that allow creatives, including models, to work independently, and simplify the whole process, while also giving access to relevant online platforms, networking opportunities, and community events.
  2. Influencer/advertiser permit: If you’re doing brand deals or sponsored posts on Instagram or any other social media platforms, the UAE Media Council requires a license, known as the Mu’lin Permit, that you can apply for through their offical website.

Understand Rates and Contracts

Agencies in Dubai usually charge a 10–20% commission on bookings. Always review contracts for exclusivity clauses and payment terms. Knowing your rights protects you from being underpaid or exploited.
