Fashion month is officially up and running. While DFW kicked things off by celebrating couture, New York is kicking things off with stripped-back looks and classic American tailoring. From coastal glamour to maximalist, downtown chic, the runways have been laid back, cool, and refreshingly modest.

In case you missed it, here are the highlights from New York Fashion Week SS26: Day 1

Ralph Lauren

Although not officially part of the New York Fashion Week calendar, Ralph Lauren hosted their show at the private design studio just a day before the official fashion week could commence. We saw the front row lined up with A-listers, from Priyaka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas to Oprah to Hikari Mori. The runway itself had models coming down a pristine white staircase in sweeping maxi dresses, wide-brimmed hats, and crisp white shirts. A common motif was stripes, from big bold lines over a maxi dress to soft, dainty lines on a pantsuit. Overall, the collection itself was stripped back and bordering on minimal, with silver accent pieces that tied each look together.

Michael Kors

Officially kicking off New York Fashion Week however was Michael Kors. The star-studded lineup this time included Gwyneth Paltrow, Olivia Wilde, Lili Reinhart, and Suki Waterhouse, among others. The collection was all about easy, breezy elegance. We saw a palette of rich browns, khaki, and pinks come down the runway in ponchos, maxi skirts, and shirt dresses. Tassels reigned supreme in this collection, adorning garments and accessories alike. Shimmery golden dresses also made their way down the runway, but the spotlight remained on the daywear, which we can easily picture donning on in the Gulf.

LIBERTINE

For the fans of maximalism, LIBERTINE did not come to play. With the theme “Viva la Revolution- the LOVE Revolution”, we saw beauty in chaos. French Revolution-style hats were paired with mismatched prints and the runway featured plenty of bling, embellishments, and loads and loads of colour!

Collina Strada

Strutting on the opposite end of this metaphorical runway was Collina Strada. Held at a helipad during golden hour, we saw a unique presentation on the runway. Each look was followed by a similar all-black counterpart, which from a distance, looks like a shadow. Frilly, feminine dresses were juxtaposed with dramatic, wide barrel jeans. Upcycled fabrics also made their way down the runways, all cleverly layered in street style with kitschy jewellery and funky footwear.
