Emily in Paris Season 5 is here, and along with being transported to Europe, we’re also transported to peak fantastical fashion. Protagonist Emily Cooper has a lot going on between friendships, love, and work, but her maximalist fashion is the one constant throughout the show. Coolly mixing patterns, colours, and details, there is nothing tame or subtle about Emily’s OOTDs and we love her, and the show, all the more for it.

Unlike previous seasons, Season 5 takes place between Paris, France, and Rome, Italy, where Emily navigates change, both location-wise and professionally. As such, the fashion takes plenty of inspiration from Italian culture for the scenes in Rome, whereas Paris has Emily sporting more tamer, sharper silhouettes.

We also saw plenty of references to the past, mainly the golden age of Italian cinema. Fits that echoed vintage glamour were constant throughout the show, think matching sets and polka dots that are flirty and feminine. If you’re looking to pull some of these outfits to add to your own closet, check out our round-up of some of the best looks from the show, and how to recreate them, modestly, of course.

The Pinstripe Blazer

Marking an entrance, both in Rome and to the audience, Emily’s green and white ensemble was a fresh start to the season. Paired with a ruffle top, geometric shorts, and a patterned tote bag, it’s a cute fit that could easily withstand the Gulf’s chaotic weather. For the modest dresser, swap the shorts for some wide-legged pants. We’d recommend a white tailored trouser, transforming the look into a business casual affair where the pinstripe blazer gets the spotlight.

The Art Deco-like Jumpsuit

Jumping on a Vespa in a Diane von Furstenberg jumpsuit, it’s another patterned piece we’ve grown to love on Emily. Looking remarkably similar to the show’s collab with Fendi, it’s an outfit inspired by the Art Deco movement, in the best way possible.

The Polka Dot Set

Netflix

We did mention polka dots and here they are! While there are plenty of instances of Emily sporting polka dots, our favourite was this breezy blue and white set from Moschino. It’s bold, pronounced, and so very Emily. Although a tad oversized, it’s not boxy and has a conservative cut that can be paired with an open abaya.

The Pinstripe Shirt

Netflix

From the pinstripe blazer to the pinstripe shirt. Seen in episode 6, this look is more restrained compared to the maximalist style Emily is known for. But chic nonetheless, especially with that blunt bob! The voluminous shirt paired with a denim pencil skirt gives a contemporary take on traditional corporate attire. To make it more modest-friendly, swap the pencil skirt for a midi one. Boots take the outfit to winter territory while also recreating that early 2000s feel.

The 70s Collar

Netflix

Seen in episode 5, the tomato-red oversized collar shirt was hard to miss. A reference to the 70s “disco collar”, it was a trend usually seen on men, but Emily makes it refreshingly feminine with a blue floral blazer.

The Floral Dress

Netflix

The tamest of them all, this dress by Victoria Beckham marked a mature change in Emily as she returns to Paris. The floral print still echoes her maximalist nature but isn’t nearly as loud or bold. The darker colour also nods to the visual change compared to Rome’s vivid colour palette.

Pinstripes + Florals

Netflix

What better way to show how Italy and France have come to Emily than by visually depicting a piece of florals and pinstripes? Throughout the season, both patterns frequently made an appearance on our screen, but this shirt by Paul Smith echoes a new Emily, one who has “conquered” both Paris and Rome.

And Finally, A Shoutout to Sylvie Grateau

Emily in Paris Season 5
Netflix

While Emily’s fashion is a constant topic online, we cannot ignore the style of her boss, Sylvie Grateau. A hard contrast to Emily’s maximalist side, Sylvie’s style tends to be more demure, a representation of French taste.

Her fashion this season was comprised of asymmetrical dresses, conservative cuts, and a striking Pucci shirt dress seen on episode 1. But her chicest piece for this season has got to be her Alberta Ferretti red cape gown. Paired with geometric-cut bangles, the piece is an easy recreation for the festive season with its modest silhouette and sculptural, eye-catching design.
