Decoding the Met Gala 2026 Dress Code “Fashion is Art”

What to expect for this year’s red carpet

While fashion months continue to dominate the conversation, the Met Gala has stood out as fashion’s biggest night out. Every year, like clockwork, the red carpet brings forth theatrics, storytelling, historical references, and plenty of flashes. This year, with the theme “Costume Art” and dress code “Fashion is Art”, the fundraiser further leans into how fashion expresses.

Joining the conversation this year will be Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour as co-chairs. The diverse panel have already become a subject of internet frenzy, as the fashion-forward wonder how Beyoncé will lead the MET, and most importantly, what she will wear.

Whereas the MET themselves are dedicated to preserving the art of dressmaking and has constantly regarded fashion as an art form. With their latest theme and dress code, it’s less of a statement and more of a question: where does fashion end and artform begin? The latest exhibition is set to focus on the relationship between clothes and the body, where fashion will be juxtaposed with works of art. Delving deep into the narrative of how fashion shapes us, and in turn, our wider culture, we’re in for a plethora of interpretations of the dress code this upcoming May.

For starters, we can expect some on-the-nose interpretations, with outfits either referencing famous artists or their work. Whereas French fashion house Saint Laurent is set to be backing the exhibition, so we can also expect Saint Laurent’s typical silhouettes to make appearances. Finally, couture brands might take centre stage here with the internet already predicting (and possibly hoping) to see brands like Schiaparelli, Iris van Herpen, or Rahul Mishra. Between sculptural silhouettes, detailed embroidery work, and modern interpretations on how fashion and the body converge, it’s clear to say that the “art” of the LBD won’t do this year. And we’re all the more excited for it!
