Shades of yellow have the fashion forward in a chokehold. First, it was butter yellow, a pastel hue that could be dressed in softness and styled with edge. Then came gold, a gilded shine that brought out everyone’s glamorous sides. Now—if the current state of modest fashion has anything to do with it—mustard yellow is the season’s defining colour, alongside blue and pastel pink.

The runways have been playing with this shade for a while. YSL had voluminous gowns and lacquered leather trenches; Valentino had a model strut in a breezy chiffon blouse; Hermes had a sharply tailored coat; and Jil Sander had a delightful mustard yellow bag appear. Designer Tove debuted a mustard yellow maxi gown during London Fashion Week while Coach had a series of mustard suede skirts, jackets, and accessories.
While the shade wasn’t as prominent as lilac, cobalt blue, or tomato red, everyday fashion has definitely shifted to accommodate the warm hue. Although deep and earthy in its undertone, the colour comes with an equally unique brightness that makes it even more fun to style. With black it can be broody, while chocolate brown softens the colour. Purple and green are funkier, but deeply loved, combinations, while dark red and blue offer a more sophisticated, luxurious feel. Either way, when it comes to incorporating the colour, mustard yellow is a versatile shade that can work as a pop of colour, as an accent, or as a statement by itself.
