Meet the 19-Year-Old Emirati Mountaineer Chasing the World’s Highest Peaks

Inside Fatima Al Awadhi's extraordinary journey to the world's highest peaks.

At just 19 years old, Fatima Al Awadhi is preparing to climb a 7,134-metre mountain. The Emirati mountaineer has already made history as the youngest Arab to summit both Mount Vinson in Antarctica and Carstensz Pyramid in Oceania, as well as the youngest Emirati to reach the summit of Mount Elbrus. Now, she’s taking on her next challenge; Lenin Peak in Kyrgyzstan, another milestone in her pursuit of completing the legendary Seven Summits.

If successful, Fatima will move one step closer to the Explorer’s Grand Slam, one of the world’s most demanding endurance achievements. The feat requires climbers to conquer the highest peak on every continent before skiing the final degree to both the North and South Poles.

Fatima’s journey into mountaineering began during one of the most difficult periods of her life. While her father was in a coma, she joined the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award programme, eventually trekking through Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley. It was there, gathered around a campfire in the Himalayas, that she made herself a promise, to complete the Seven Summits before turning 20.

Since then, she’s turned that promise into reality one mountain at a time. Her first major summit was Mount Kilimanjaro, followed by Mount Elbrus, Vinson Massif and Carstensz Pyramid. This month, she’ll attempt her highest elevation yet with Lenin Peak in the Pamir Mountains, an expedition undertaken under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.

Away from high-altitude expeditions, Fatima is a full-time Economics student, balancing university lectures with months of physical training, technical preparation, travel and recovery. In the space of just one year, she has progressed from her first 5,000-metre expedition to attempting a peak above 7,000 metres.

Her ambitions don’t stop there. Fatima hopes to become the youngest person in the region to complete the Seven Summits before ultimately taking on Mount Everest and Lhotse in a double summit within 24 hours.

“My journey goes beyond summits and records,” she says. “I hope my story encourages others to say yes to unfamiliar paths, step outside their comfort zones, and embrace challenges they never thought possible.” At a time when records are often measured in numbers, Fatima Al Awadhi is proving that resilience, purpose and determination can take you much higher.
