In some places, a full outfit for a coffee run might raise a few eyebrows. In the GCC, that’s hardly a problem.
Here, you can have absolutely nowhere to be and still look like you’ve got an 8pm reservation. Coffee? Bring the good bag. Family visit? Bring the good bag. Airport outfit? Bring the good bag. Running errands? Please. You guessed it. Bring the good bag. There is, apparently, no such thing as saving it for a special occasion. In the GCC, the special occasion is simply leaving the house.
There’s a particular pleasure in getting dressed properly for something completely ordinary. You put on the Loro Piana abaya, add the Cartier earrings because they make your face look inexplicably better, spray on a little Le Labo, pick up the Bottega Veneta bag and suddenly you’re not going for an iced coffee anymore. You’re out. There’s a difference. And you look chic, which, frankly, feels like reason enough.
Maybe the occasion is just Tuesday. Maybe nobody else noticed the earrings. Maybe the bag is wildly unnecessary for a 20-minute coffee run. But you noticed. And honestly, that’s the whole point.
The Outfit Has to Be Ready for Anything
Part of it is probably the social life. Plans in the GCC have a funny way of multiplying. You leave the house for coffee, someone suggests going to an event and grabbing lunch after, lunch turns into a visit, someone’s aunt is there, and then dinner is on the cards too. Suddenly the outfit you thought was “casual” has had a full day out. Better hope the shoes can keep up.
There’s also something rooted in the culture of hospitality. When you’re constantly having people over, heading to someone else’s house, meeting for dinner, visiting family or seeing friends, dressing well becomes less of an event and more of a habit.
Slightly Overdressed Is a State of Mind
The funny thing is, being overdressed in the GCC rarely comes with that awkward “oh no, I’ve done too much” feeling you might get somewhere else. Nobody bats an eye when someone turns up to a casual restaurant in a beautiful abaya, perfect hair and a Birkin.
