When it comes to picking a “colour of the season”, SS27 is pointing towards the whole rainbow. While some runways still sport minimalistic palettes, the consensus is in—beige is on its way out and clothes are back to being saturated.
For designers, colours are being used as shorthand to play with creative styling, while others stick to chunky colour blocking. Even monochrome looks are being designed with various shades of the same colour rather than one wash. And the biggest (welcome) eyesore of them all is colour converging through pattern mixing. Leopard alongside snakeskin. Zebra complemented with cheetah. And metallic accents to top it off.
The fashion calendar has made its decision and the fashion-forward have begun to incorporate it. While the collections we’re currently seeing will officially arrive early next year, the recreations have already begun. Using the runways as inspiration, expect these colour combinations to make their way into our wardrobes.
Teal and Ruby
Teal, AKA Tiffany Blue, is currently having a resurgence. Maybe it’s nostalgia or maybe the colour has found itself in the hands of a new generation of stylists. Either way people have been taking this deep blue colour and pairing it with red to create a high-contrast look.
Purple and Red
If there’s anything to take from the current runways, it is that red is slowly becoming a neutral. Perhaps a natural continuation after chocolate brown, and a cultural fit after the latest iPhone release, but red has solidified itself into the mainstream consciousness and fashion is taking note. At Tory Burch, red was paired in a myriad of ways but the one that stuck out was a red-orange skirt styled with a deep purple top.
Pink and Mustard
One of the more unique, and rarely done, combinations spotted, pastel pink and mustard work as easy transition colours. While both are bright, the earthiness of mustard brings a warmer feel to any outfit and what else can you expect for fall? The colour also works as a neutral base for the pink to shine but if that feels too out there, start with a mustard monochrome and pink accents.
Cobalt Blue and Lemon Yellow
Cobalt blue, or Yves Klein blue, has subconsciously been the colour of the year. And the runways are following suit, pairing the bright shade with an equally bright lemon yellow. Of course, the combination is meant for Spring-Summer, but if there’s one way to repurpose all our butter yellow pieces, pairing them with cobalt blue accessories gives the refresh we’re looking for.
Red and Mustard
Although it’s teetering close to McDonald’s territory, mustard pulls the colour down with its earthy undertone. And if you’re still struggling to style the colours, take some notes from Prabal Gurung which paired a mustard yellow dress over red pants, creating a peek-a-boo effect while allowing the yellow to shine.
Luminous Blue and Orange
After the New York Knicks had their historic win, it seems like the uniform colour pairing stuck. But if the colour seems too bright for an autumnal palette, allow the orange to sit as an accent over the blue.
Blue and Forest Green
One of the cosier pairings, we saw this combination all across NYFW and have been loving it since. Depending on the shade of blue, this pairing can go from loud and bright to subtle and warm, allowing for multiple reinventions.
Purple and Yellow
What’s unique about this combination is that although the pair are equally bright on their own, they sit harmoniously side by side instead of clashing. At Tory Burch, this pairing was yellow accents over purple, while at Diane von Furstenberg, the opener brought the pairing to light in a purple and yellow spotted dress, complemented with contrasting snakeskin pumps.
