There are plenty of beauty products worth experimenting with, but makeup brushes aren’t one of them. While foundations, blushes and lip colours come and go, a well-made brush can stay in your routine for years. In fact, many professional makeup artists rely on the same trusted tools for a decade or longer.

Rather than filling your vanity with dozens of brushes you’ll rarely use, investing in a carefully chosen edit can make all the difference. These are the essential brushes that deserve a place in every makeup bag, and the ones that will stand the test of time.

The Complexion Brush

If you’re only investing in one face brush, make it a dense synthetic complexion brush. It blends liquid foundation, skin tints and cream products seamlessly while wasting less product than a sponge. A double-ended version is even better, allowing you to apply foundation on one side and cream blush, bronzer or concealer on the other.

The Fluffy Blending Brush

A good blending brush is the difference between eyeshadow that looks effortless and eyeshadow that looks patchy. Its job isn’t to pack on colour but to soften edges, diffuse pigment and seamlessly blend everything together.

Perfect for smudging eyeliner, defining the lash line, highlighting the inner corner or applying shadow with precision, this is the brush that quietly elevates every eye look.

The Setting Brush

Instead of a large powder brush that blankets the entire face, opt for a smaller fluffy brush that lets you apply powder only where you need it, under the eyes, around the nose and across the T-zone. The result is a fresher, more natural complexion.

The Angled Cheek Brush

Whether you’re applying blush, bronzer or contour, an angled brush follows the natural shape of the cheekbones for effortless placement. It offers enough precision to sculpt while remaining fluffy enough to blend.

How to Make Them Last

A quality brush should be treated as an investment and, with proper care, can last ten years or more. Wash brushes used with cream products weekly and powder brushes every two to three weeks, then leave them to dry flat or with the bristles facing downward so water does not loosen the glue inside the ferrule. Store them upright only once fully dry, and avoid crushing them inside overfilled makeup bags.
