Over the past year or so, we’ve noticed how scarves were coming back into question as a defining accessory piece. From headscarves to belts to the muddled socio-cultural conversations on how communities have been utilising this piece of fabric before the mainstream caught hold. And now, following its natural progression, is the resurgence of the early 2000s skinny scarf—the thin piece of fabric where, if you squint, it looks like a tie that’s been undone.

Leading the charge this season with putting the scarf on the runway was streetwear label 7 FOR ALL MANKIND. For its Spring-Summer 2027 collection, the brand honed in on the skinny scarf as it transitioned from corporate wear to daytime wear to dresses for a night out. Brands like Tory Burch fashioned the skinny scarf into a feather boa, styling it with a trench coat. Whereas at Chanel, the scarf is tied loosely, either draped across the collar or left undone right beneath a cropped tweed blazer. Either way, the scarf is rarely seen as a practical item of clothing but a fashion moment.
Among the fashion-forward, the scarf is given similar treatment. Matched with cardigans, used as a colourful juxtaposition, or worn as a tie with a dress channelling the true ‘00s style, the scarf is a silly but fun way to play around with colour, texture, and, when you think about it, even jewellery.
In a morbid sense, the trend comes at a time when the world gets hotter as a result of climate change. While our necks aren’t prepared for a chunky knit snugly covering them, a skinny scarf provides just enough warmth for the new kinds of seasons that we have to prepare for. Fashioning them into belts, cummerbunds, or off-kilter ties just helps to make sure that we can use the accessory all season. Within the Dubai climate, we can picture these thin scarves over abayas and boots, fashioned as a headband with the pieces to trail over, and worn across the collar Chanel-style to bring a fresh and funky look to business casual.
